ACDI researcher joins UNFCCC Global Goal on Adaptation talks in Bonn

Climate Risk Lab researcher Luckson Zvobgo participated in the recent Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) discussions at the June Climate Meetings (SB 62nd Session) in Bonn. During the in-session technical workshop, Luckson presented the progress of the technical experts’ work in developing GGA indicators to UNFCCC Parties, SB Chairs and Observer organisations.
Throughout the June session, Luckson supported the Africa Group of Negotiators and like-minded groups in the G77 to build a shared understanding of critical issues such as means of implementation. This work is central to ensuring that the final set of GGA indicators adequately addresses adaptation finance, technology and capacity building needs.
The Bonn discussions provided clear technical guidance for the development of finance, adaptation technology and capacity building indicators. They also created space for technical experts to meet in a closed workshop to refine their work before handing it over to Parties for the next stage of political negotiations ahead of COP 30.
The session highlighted the importance of global indicators in tracking progress for achieving GGA, particularly in measuring how global effort is closing the adaptation gap, particularly developing regions and frontline communities. ASCEND’s work underscores that without a robust, globally coherent set of indicators, it will be difficult to evaluate whether adaptation actions are sufficient and equitable.
“The Bonn experience demonstrated why securing indicators that seek to understand access to quality and appropriate quantity of finance, adaptation technology and capacity building of developing countries is critical for achieving global goal on adaptation, protecting millions of people in frontline communities in developing countries,” explains Zvobgo.
The June meetings also gave Luckson the opportunity to engage directly with other technical experts and stakeholders, strengthening trust and collaboration that will be essential as the indicator framework moves into its final stages. This process will be critical in ensuring that the GGA provides a clear, measurable pathway to reducing the global adaptation gap and securing greater ambition in climate resilience efforts.
