One of the ACDI interns, Makeya Karlie, has been awarded the prestigeous Green Leaves Education Foundation Masters scholarship in Climate Change and Health to the value of a R100 000. Makeya will be pursuing her MPhil in Climate Change and Development through the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) in 2017. The ACDI, through the Faculty of Health Science, has been collaborating with the department of Public Health and Family Medicine to deliver a scholarship which brings together issues relating to Climate Change and Health, under the Environmental Health Track, at UCT.

The Green Leaves Education Foundation was established in 2013 and provides financial support to aspiring students in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The core modules offered by the MPhil in Climate Change and Development cover an extensive range of topics, from integrated knowledge on key issues in climate change and adaptation, sustainable development, and African climate variability and change, to international climate change issues and legal frameworks. Makeya is enthusiastically interested in these topics, and since her Master’s coursework will include elective modules from UCT’s Master of Public Health program under the Environmental Health track, her Master’s experience is likely to be an immensely fulfilling experience.

During her internship at the ACDI Makeya has taken a fervent interest in climate change issues, especially the impact of climate change on water resources, human lives, and different natural ecosystems. Through her work at the ACDI Makeya has become aware of the numerous opportunities as well as knowledge gaps in the field of climate change. This is especially true for developing countries, like our own, and Makeya is excited to have been afforded the opportunity to start her journey in making meaningful contributions in the nexus of Climate Change, Development, and Public Health.
