Clea Abello

ASCEND Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Clea Abello Buyle is the current Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the ASCEND Blue Africa synthesis team. She is an environmental engineer and marine scientist holding a PhD from the University of Montpellier, where her research examined the impacts of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea within the biodiversity–climate–fisheries nexus.

Her expertise includes ecological modelling, spatial analysis, data mining, and participatory research approaches. As coordinator of the Blue Africa synthesis project, she leads efforts to compile and integrate diverse datasets and expert-based knowledge on African coastal and marine ecosystems, with the goal of identifying critical data gaps and assessing trade-offs and co-benefits of different blue carbon interventions on biodiversity, climate mitigation, and local livelihoods.
