Jonathan works at a multi-national environmental consultancy, contributing to projects focused on managing impacts of renewable energy on biodiversity, specifically bats. He graduated from UCT with a MSc in Zoology in 2011 and has been at the forefront of bats and wind energy research in South Africa since then. He has contributed to the good practise guidelines for surveying bats at wind energy facilities in South Africa, is the lead author on the guidelines for monitoring bats impacts at operational wind energy facilities, and is a founding member of the South African Bat Assessment Advisory Panel. He has also compiled guidance on mitigation and fatality thresholds aimed at reducing impacts to bats at wind energy facilities.
At ACDI, Jonathan will be working with Dr Sheona Shackleton on projects related to Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EbA). He is interested in the relationship between environmental stewardship and human wellbeing including topics such as resilience, systems thinking, environmental justice and urbanisation and how they relate to social-ecological systems.
Outside of his career, Jonathan plays ultimate frisbee and has represented South Africa as a player and coach at three world championships.
