The Energy Research Centre is the result of the logical merger of activities of the Energy Research Institute and the Energy Development Research Centre at the University of Cape Town.

This transdisciplinary project is funded by the Carnegie Corporation. It is in collaboration with a community-based company under the aegis of Cape Town’s Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading programme (www.vpuu.org). We aim to construct a small public space for women to socialise and children to play in safety. In the next phases, research into using the public space as a locus for gathering, developing, testing and disseminating sustainable technologies and products that contribute to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals will be undertaken.
