As part of the EPRU, Anthony is on a panel exploring the potential economic costs and benefits of mining shale gas (fracking) in the semi-desert Karoo region of South Africa. The CSIR has commissioned a series of studies into the potential impacts of fracking on tourism, agriculture, health, water, the natural environment, communities, and the transport sector, amongst others. Resource economist, Anthony Leiman is interested in economic implications of shale mining for these sectors, in order to inform decision makers by establishing the costs and benefits of fracking in the ‘broadest economic sense’.
