Research Interests: landscape ecology, nature-based solutions, climate and health, environmental history

Dr. Downing is a climate resilience expert with a strong background in environmental sciences, natural resource management, and specialized training in GIS and remote sensing. Currently he is undertaking research on health impacts of climate change in urban informal settlements of Kenya. His previous work centred on climate change impacts on natural ecology in sensitive alpine regions of Kenya and on advancing Nature-based solutions in Africa’s savanna regions. Dr. Downing also has considerable experience in ecosystem management with over six years of experience in the U.S. Forest Service as a GIS Specialist and Landscape Ecologist working on large-scale landscape restoration projects.
