Prof Muriithi is an associate professor in the Department of Economics and Development Studies (DEDS). He has over 15 years in both leadership and hands- on research in applied fields of health economics, education, poverty and inequality, development economics, social determinants of health, and national health strategy development. He is widely published in these fields. His current research affiliations include the Africa Center of Excellence in Inequality Research (ACEIR) based at University of Cape Town and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) based in Nairobi. Prof Muriithi is also part of several projects including the Global National Transfer Account where he is the Kenya team lead, the Counting Women Work (CWW) project based at the University of Berkeley California, USA, and the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) project housed at University of Washington Seattle. He is well acquainted with using national survey data, where I use statistical packages for economic analysis like STATA, SPSS, and the R program to undertake analysis.

Prof. Damaris Nduta Wachira-Mbui is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi and an associate at the Institute for Climate Change. She is also head of the Physical and Industrial Chemistry section. She is keen to pursue research project initiatives in environmental monitoring and control, sensors, bioenergy and climate change mitigation and in modelling. She has pursued initiatives in solid waste and wastewater management, where she has sought ways of wastewater remediation using various technologies and has sought the production of biogas and bioelectricity from solid waste.

Dr Parita Sureshchandra Shah is a lecturer in the department of geography specializing in environmental planning and governance. She is an Environmental Impact and Audit Assessor and Registered with the National Environment Management Authority in Kenya. Her expertise ranges in the fields of environmental planning and management, biogeography and policies and legal frameworks, climate change, ecotourism, natural resources management and population, health, and environment. Dr Shah is well-published on issues ranging from climate change, multilateral environmental agreements to ecotourism. She has been a Member of the Karura Forest Educational and Environmental Trust (KFEET) and has coordinated the educational syllabus of the Forest. Her efforts in conservation have been recognized by the Oshwal Community as well as the Jain Social Group in Kenya. Dr Shah has also been recognized as a Trainer of Trainees by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

Research interests: Green energy solutions
Dr. Kenneth Mbali is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. His interest is in energy and environmental sustainability. His research focuses on the pros and cons of continued use of hydrocarbons and the benefits of transiting to clean energy. His interests span the nexus between energy use and environmental security, and how the two variables have affected humanity, especially in developing countries. He believes that a deeper understanding of the two is significant as it will help the global community in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.
Becoming an Associate
ARUA Centre of Excellence in Climate and Development (ARUA-CD) welcomes researchers from within its partner institutions to be listed as Associates. Any member of the three universities (Universities of Cape Town, Ghana and Nairobi) under ARUA-CD is eligible, as well as registered students (Student Associates). Interested members should be working within the research focus themes of ARUA-CD.
These include:
- Climate-resilient landscapes;
- Climate governance;
- Climate knowledge systems;
- Sustainable energy for poverty reduction;
- Climate action and social inequality;
- Climate risk management;
- Climate change teaching and learning
Accepted Associates are:
listed on ARUA-CDs website, with a short description of their expertise, and their contact details
are added to an ARUA-CD Teams Group, and can receive and post messages to the group’s email (for example, funding opportunities, other items of interest)
relevant publications and outputs by associates are listed on ARUA-CD website and highlighted in ARUA-CD newsletters. These may be outputs directly funded by ARUA-CD or collectively produced by work of ARUA-CD associates with external funding.
relevant projects led or co-led by associates are listed on ARUA-CD website and highlighted in ARUA-CD newsletters
are preferentially invited to be involved in grant proposals
are requested to respond to periodic requests from the coordinators for information for the website and newsletters
Interested individuals are requested to complete the sign-up form (https://forms.gle/AuZRsMYrKrWSqceL6) and also obtain permission from their line manager.
Registered students of the partner institutions are eligible if they are supervised by a current Associate of ARUA-CD and may also enrol using the same form. Other students may register to enroll but will also need their supervisor’s approval and will be screened and notified directly if additional information is required.
