Andrew Gilder & Olivia Rumble will present a talk on South African Climate Change Policy Trajectory in light of the Paris Agreement. The seminar will be from 1pm- 2pm.


Andrew Gilder is South Africa’s leading climate change and carbon markets lawyer with more than a decade working in this highly dynamic area of the law. With more than 16 years’ experience, Andrew leads ENSAfrica’s Climate Change and Carbon Markets Practice Area from within the Environmental Department, specialising in all aspects of carbon markets and climate change law and policy. Andrew regularly speaks and lectures on climate change and carbon markets policy and law.

Olivia Rumble is an Associate within ENSafrica’s Environmental Department working between the Climate Change and Carbon Markets Practice Area and more general environmental, mining and natural resources law. Olivia is developing specialisations in climate change adaption law, driven by work on the policy alignment processes for South African’s Long Term Adaptation Strategy, and in climate change litigation. Olivia regularly speaks and lectures on climate change and carbon markets policy and law.

  • Implications of Paris for South African climate change policy development: South Africa’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution – status, timeframes and potential development in Nationally Determined Contribution
  • Elements of climate change policy development, their inter-relationship and implications for business:

-   Four component mitigation policy: carbon tax, Desired Emission Reduction Outcomes (DEROs) and carbon budgets, Pollution Prevention Plans, monitoring and evaluation.

-    Adaptation policy: Long Term Adaption Strategy Phases 1 and 2 and development of the National Adaptation Plan and National Adaptation Strategy.
