The Energy Research Centre (University of Cape Town) together with the Centre for Policy Research (India) are hosting a Forum on Development and Mitigation in Cape Town on 27-29 January 2014. The Forum is convened and supported by the MAPS Programme.

The Forum is conceptualised as a platform to share developing country experience on development and mitigation, from a developing country perspective. It is part of a series of collaborative events hosted by Southern research institutions to stimulate conversation around global and national climate governance of development and climate change, both in the context of local planning and in the lead up to negotiation of the 2015 UNFCCC agreement.

The Forum will be run as an academic conference and is intended to facilitate, enrich and expand existing dialogues and collaborations on the broad theme of development and climate change mitigation. We invite abstracts on the following topics: poverty and inequality, co-benefits of mitigation actions, alternative development paths, resource endowments, energy security, competitiveness, national planning for a low carbon future, process experiences and analytical tools. The content of the final programme will be tailored around the themes of the successful abstracts, and the final papers will be published as part of conference proceedings. The closing date for abstract submission is Friday 26 July 2013. The review committee consists of academics and practitioners from the University of Cape Town, Tsinghua University,

Beijing, and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The Forum programme will include discussions and breakaway roundtables to focus on particular issues. Ample opportunity will be given for networking and corridor discussion. Highlights of the Forum will be broadcast via Twitter, blogs and videos. The official proceedings will be published on the MAPS, CPR and ERC websites.
