An ACDI and EGS Department Collaboration.
Bio:
Emma Lecavalier is a research fellow in the Global Risk Governance Programme, focusing on sustainable transitions in China and India as a part of a multi-national research collaboration under SANCOOP. She completed her MPhil in International Relations at the University of Oxford, where her work focused on natural disasters and climate risk in South Asia. Emma has worked in the past with the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs, the Atlantic Council of Canada, and the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation in Washington DC.
Abstract:
In this talk, Lacavalier aims to explain the differing approaches China and India are taking in developing sustainable energy systems. As these emerging powers negotiate the competing demands of economic growth and environmental sustainability, each has increasingly strong motivations to make sustainable energy work. However, existing infrastructure, prevailing institutional interests, regulatory failings, and concerns about energy security are among the existing barriers to change. Using original research conducted in China and India this year, this talk will highlight the challenges and opportunities the Asian BRICS are facing when it comes to reforming their electrical energy systems, drawing insight from these cases that can be used to reflect on the South African power system.
