The EMG water and climate change seminar is on Tuesday 29 September 2015 from 10 until 1, followed by a light lunch,at EMG's office (10 Nuttal Road, Observatory).

The theme will be 'Water management devices: an update and new perspectives.' Water management devices have been rolled out in poor and working class neighbourhoods of Cape Town since 2007, and despite widespread resistance and unhappiness with them they continue to be a core part of the City's water demand  management strategy. We have carried out action research with different members of the Coalition for Environmental Justice and the Western Cape Water Caucus over the years, and at present are focussing on the impact of these devices on people and businesses in Dunoon. This case study has introduced an interesting new angle on our critique of the devices - the question of water for multiple uses (i.e. water for domestic use, water for small businesses, water for food gardens) and the fact that these multiple uses are not considered in setting the daily water allocation (currently set at 350 litres for most households). The seminar will follow our usual format of having two or three inputs bringing different perspectives, followed by facilitated discussion.
