Chief Research Officer

Dr Nick Simpson is Chief Research Officer in Climate Change Literacy and Complex Climate Change Risk in the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town.

An IPCC author and rated researcher by the South African National Research Foundation, his work on complex climate change risk advanced our understanding of compound and cascading climate risk, including response risk. He is currently working on research programmes that extend our understanding of how we can best anticipate and respond to current and projected impacts of climate change impacts across education, sport and heritage. Nick has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles since 2018, including the first continental-scale studies on climate change literacy rates, climate risk to heritage, and adaptation feasibility assessments for Africa. His work has also developed prior research streams across climate change and migration and displacement, water, cities, disaster risk management, vulnerability assessment, energy transitions and environmental assessment.

Nick holds a PhD in environmental assessment, an MPhil in Society, Environment and Sustainability, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education all from the University of Cape Town.
