Working towards resilient urban food systems: Planning and policy

Food insecurity is a critical challenge facing our cities, and one that is set to be exacerbated in many ways by future climate change. Drawing on work conducted in Cape Town and elsewhere in Southern Africa, Jane Battersby-Lennard argues that the solutions to food insecurity lie not in household scale solutions, but in a systemic approach to food system planning. By considering the food system as a whole it is possible to identify points of vulnerability and resilience to various forms of shocks and stresses. This presentation argues that if this approach is taken, a new set of policy and planning opportunities arise that may assist in making more climate resilient cities and reducing food insecurity.
