South Africa’s national REDD initiative: assessing the potential of the forestry sector on climate change mitigation

An in-depth look at the REDD+ initiative in the international arena and more specifically in the South African context. This paper discusses both opportunites created by REDD+, such as job creation and skills development in rural areas of South Africa, as well as challenges associated with the implementation of the mechanism, such as those relating to land tenure and income management.
